A call to awareness

If you are like I was, you probably don’t think about your menstrual cycle that much. That is until it shows up mid workday, on vacation, during a presentation, at your kids sports practice, on an airplane, or any other unwelcome time.

Another time our cycles suddenly become important is when we are trying or not trying to conceive a baby. And then it becomes practically all consuming. When is the right/wrong time to conceive/not conceive. Did I get pregnant this month? When was my last period? And then we are frantically calculating, hoping and praying that we either are or are not pregnant. This has been me.

The last reason most women know a smidge more about their cycles is if they have a problem related to their cycle and it causes pain that prevents them from going to work or school. At this point what we know about our cycle beyond the obvious ovulation and flow of blood is that we loathe our cycles. Yes, this was me as well.

Why would we give it any other thought?

This is where I come in. As a menstrual cycle advocate, I have come to whole-heartedly embrace all parts of my cyle. And that is not an easy sentence to write, my friends.

If you are one of the few lucky ones who have breezed through menstrual cycle life barely noticing anything about your cycle, you are not alone, and that is awesome. But what if I told you, you can harness your hormonal month in a way that makes perfect sense to you and propels you to complete goals in the flow of your cycle?

What learning about cycle awareness can do for us and for those around us:

Our cycle gives us amazing abilities that change each month. When you learn what week you are in of your month, you can tap into what your natural ability is and plan for it. It will take the guess work out of your hardest days and let you capture your favorite days. What can we plan for?

  • Hosting

  • Travel

  • Collaborating

  • Learning something new

  • Organizing

  • Finding a creative outlet

  • Making a list that you can finish

  • Enjoying being in the kitchen

  • Perfect days for chores

  • Knowing when to make big decisions

  • Date nights

  • Setting boudaries for self care

  • Resting like a queen… and so much more!

If all this sounds good to you, because you find you keep setting the date night and wishing you were home in bed instead, or you make a list only to look back at the incomplete tasks and berate yourself. Well, no more sister!

Listen, I know life throws curve balls and this is no sales pitch or scheme to never have problems in life ever again. But what if by knowing our internal selves, our internal biological make-up, we learn how to live in harmony with it? Our femenescence. Instead of constantly throwing ourselves around, pushing to get it done, to stay at a pace that requires stimulants, alcohol, and pain killers?

My friends, there is a better way. And by understanding what our hormones are doing on the daily, we can ride the waves of our cycle.

Cycle awareness is about learning about our own internal clock (28 day clock). It’s like a weather map of all of our different energies levels; physical, mental, emotional, social, and sexual. All of these energies are shifting everyday, every week, month and life phase.

A little bit about me

I am a menstrual cycle advocate, mentor, and writer. I am an avid nature lover, so it comes natural to observe the outer seasons and see the intricate connection to our cycle phases using the seasons.

Using my life experience of natural cycling for decades, not cycling while on “the pill” for about 7 years, suffering and healing from endometriosis, and now 5 years into perimenopause, I’m here for your whole journey.

I am an avid research enthusiast and when my curiosity flares up, I go deep into medical journals, books, podcasts and more looking for evidence of ways the cycle changes, foods that support each phase, exercise methods geared for cyclic women and wherever else the rabbit trail leads me. I care deeply about my research and about sharing it with anyone that wants to know more about how their bodies work for them every day. I care about women. Gone are the days of jealousy and competitive thinking. Gone are the days of labeling along with everyone else that women are just “crazy”. I am finding deep connection within my relationships with my women friends and with my husband and son, all because I know me better than ever before and they know me better too.

I have been practicing cycle awareness for over 5 years and in that time, mentored and taught many women how to navigate their inner seasonal weather map to enrich their lives— learning to live with instead of against their cycles.

What women are saying…

“I know I've said this before, but this information is invaluable. All women should know it. I wish I had learned it as a teenager! Once I started tuning into my cycles, I had a better idea of when to make big decisions, when to do more intense workouts, when to sit and rest quietly, ect. By understanding my body, I no longer had to feel bad about not "pushing through" something. But maybe more importantly, I'm able to teach my daughter how to pay attention to her cycle. So grateful for your work! ☺️”

~Susan Campbell- Founder of beauty line, Phosis, and author of Phosis, the substack publication

“There is something powerful about listening to a podcast from you about the exact phase I'm in. I listened to this when I was in my late winter phase (last week when released) and I had been so confused by what I had been feeling because I didn't think it resonated with winter. But after listening to your podcast a light bulb went off and it all made sense about where I was and what I was feeling and experiencing. It felt exactly how you were describing.

I've been giving all of this a lot of thought since you've taught me so much and once I realized where my body was I could accept it's "weaknesses" in the moment and understand its strength.”

~Shelby Tutty- Author of The Periprofessional and founder of substack’s, Womens Health 365 Collective
