Today I am talking about Spring! Yes, I know it’s almost Autumn/Fall in the Northern Hemisphere. I’m not completely confused, its just that every cyclic month there is an Inner Spring and I’m going to shed a little light on what that can mean for your physical, mental, emotional, sexual, and social energies for the 2nd week of your menstrual month.
Here’s the discussion points today:
What’s going on in Spring?
Natural abilities with Spring energy
Challenges for Spring Phase
Moving through Spring
Key take-aways
When her inner Spring is in the air, the external world becomes bright and new again! Its a feeling of, (finally!) I can get shit done! Yes, all of these exclamation points are needed because inner Spring is full of them!
It’s time to shake off inner Winter, peek out of your she-cave and realize you have been out of the loop because holy mother, look at that kitchen sink! And how long have those towels just been laying there. Is this clean or dirty? And off you go to get it done.
How I look when I come out to see if it’s Spring yet.
If you have rested well all the way to the end of your inner Winter, chances are, your inner Spring energy has your brain power and your body power on hyper drive. In fact, if you don’t give your body something to do quickly, the lists build and it can be hard to know where to start which can lead to anxiety.
So, best to just get moving in any way possible. Pull those walking/running/dancing/roller-skating or whatever shoes you need to get you moving. After a short workout the brain works so much better at putting all the pieces together, and that’s when it’s time to make a list. Sometimes I’m sitting in my car after a jog and just start listing everything that popped up while I was exercising.
This is how I feel when I’m running in Spring!
What’s going on in Spring?
Day 6/7 to 13/14 (Of course we know all women are different and will have their own experience as to when Spring is on.)
spring is the follicular phase after bleeding
estrogen rises and we start feeling good again
The ovaries are preparing to drop an egg for fertilization which can give you those “give it to me,” vibes.
Testosterone at the end of Spring gives a little bump around day 11 to 13 and can be the thrust behind your competitive nature, even if you don’t think you have one.
increase in energy on all fronts (Physical, emotional, social, sexual and mental energies are on the rise)
a strong urge to get shit done
Brain power improves rapidly and suddenly you go from wondering how to do it, to knowing exactly how to do it.
This is your brain in Spring

Challenges for Spring Phase:
Trying to keep all those lists in your head
Being very blunt with people
Literally and figuratively running people over especially with words
Impatience
Filling up the entire month with things to do, not taking into account the inward phases
Trying to do everything at once
Not remembering to pace yourself and trying to sprint to the long goals
Emerging from Winter too quickly and taking your grandiose ideas to your harshest critics
Not getting exercise as a physical outlet
Sexual frustration
Skipping or forgetting to eat meals because there is so much to do
When Inner Spring doesn’t quite “spring” because of illness, or stress, or perimenopause or hormonal imbalances
You are a tender shoot. Emerge slowly and cautiously. Treat yourself as you would these little seedlings for a full harvest.
Moving through Spring
Emerge slowly. This means holding the tension that tries to get you up and going too fast. You have a whole phase to get it done. Begin with planning and list making, late Winter to early Spring. Then start to move your body around day 5 by doing something mild like walking or hiking. By Day 7/8 have a plan to do something that pushes yourself physically. In mid-Spring (9/10) begin to tackle projects head on. Late Spring (day 10-13) is great for enjoying the sociability that comes with Spring by hosting parties or making plans to see people.
I absolutely love Spring. However, sometimes I notice irritation or anger crops up in Spring. This is an indication that I need to ask myself “what do I need?”. Sometimes it can be a signal to take care of my liver as the liver is what processes hormones and interestingly, Chinese Medicine associates the liver with the Spring/Wood element. When I had repeating emotional Spring phases I found acupuncture and liver supporting foods and herbs really helped clear this up for me. * Full disclaimer: I am not a doctor. If you have unhealthy mood symptoms in Spring it is a good idea to get checked out by a professional.
Key take-aways:
How you have cared for yourself in your inner Winter will have an affect on your Spring. So be good to yourself and rest in Winter.
Emerge slowly and let your brain power work out first. This can mean catching up on computer work or calling someone back that you silenced in winter.
Sign up for a new class or learn something new!
And by all means make lists!!!!
Make exercise your top priority. Whatever that means for you, walk, run, gym, dancing, playing tennis (think cardio).
Tackle all the lists!
Watch out for running people over. Try to do your projects solo if possible.
Run after your goals.
And don’t forget to eat something! Blood sugar is especially sensitive in Spring.
Now I know we are heading into Fall in the outer world here in the Northern Hemisphere but we can put our inner Spring to practice for the actual Fall season by looking ahead and planning our Fall months with fun Fall things, great Fall meals, and catching up with friends and don’t forget a Fall 5k like the Turkey Trot!
If I can sum up Spring in 3 words it would be, “Run, Girl, Run!”
Tell me, what 3 words sum up your Spring Phase?
…more to come, stay tuned!
